On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 JCU defeated Foro Italico 5-4 to claim the Roman Universities Championship title for the first time in its history.
Foro Italico marched to the field with 3 championship victories under their belt, while JCU’s advantage lifted them three points clear of the defending titleholders.
The game full of goals and emotions kicked off as E. Hegel assisted O. Whalen to get JCU rolling by setting up the striker’s first goal. Hegel herself was next to get onto the score sheet just seconds later. However, Foro Italico’s pressure led to JCU losing the ball, and for the rivals to slot in their first goal at 16 minutes in. Moments before halftime, Velasquez struck home the goal that secured JCU at a 3-1 lead.
The second half opened with Foro Italico gradually balancing the score from the onset, only to fall behind at 4-2 thanks to Whalen’s second strike. With both teams giving their all, Foro Italico managed to strike back yet again leaving the score at 4-3.
Thanks to the support and encouragement of both President Pavoncello and the JCU community who flocked to support them, Whalen continued her streak and scored the decisive goal of the game that secured the victory of the Gladiators at 5-4.
Athletics Coordinator Marco Iorio is overjoyed: “After much work we have achieved a result that few believed in. We have always believed in our potential and the girls have been exemplary in all respects. Special thanks to the staff and especially our captain, Maria Martynovych: she is the true representation of the JCU spirit!
During the awards ceremony Nicole Luvisotti was honored as the best player of the tournament, alongside Sarah Velasquez for most goals scored.
Congratulations to the JCU Lady Gladiators!
