On Wednesday, March 4th, the John Cabot Gladiators beat Foro Italico 3-1 in the most challenging match of the Spring 2015 season.
The game kicked off with Foro Italico immediately gaining control of the field, with continuous strikes at defense. After several attempts at a counteroffensive, the Gladiators began to slowly break through Foro Italico’s attack, and into their defense. Yet the opponents were able to secure the advantage of the first half thanks to a penalty kick goal which left the score at 1-0.
At halftime, Coach Concari tweaked the strategy and organization of the team, and gave them the boost of encouragement they needed to come back strong. Concari’s speech payed off, as just a few minutes into the second half, team Captain Sergio Romano evened the score with a fantastic goal.
Tied at 1-1, the Gladiators continued to push strong, and secured the lead with a beautiful header by Adriano Landi. The entry of Luca Santagati into the field bagged the victory once and for all, as his powerful goal marked an explosion of joy amongst teammates and supporters. The game came to a close with Alfredo Verrina strongly blocking Foro Italico’s final attempts at a rebound.
The man of the match, Luca S. commented on the best goal of the season thus far “It is a fantastic feeling, but the victory of our team as a whole was even greater. The opponents were really on top of their game, but the goal gave our team the final boost of confidence and assurance!”
