• When in Rome
The main character, played by Kristen Bell, is stealing coins from the “famous fountain of Love” (inspired by the Trevi Fountain). The actual fountain used in the film was specially built and placed in the middle of Piazza Borghese just for the movie set. The fountain seemed so real that walking-by tourists even threw coins in it, even though the monument was not mentioned in their tour guides. Do not worry if you do not get to see this exact fountain- Rome is full of other beautiful ones, like Fontana di Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is in 5 minutes walk from the Guarini campus. I also recommend visiting the fountain, featured in the opening sequence of La Grande Bellezza, it is located on Gianicolo right behind the Guarini Campus. When in Rome film also featured Piazza della Maddalena, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
• Spectre ( James Bond)
The pedestrian area underneath Roman bridges, around Ponte Sant’Angelo, Ponte Mazzini and Ponte Sisto, was used for the car chasing scene in the latest James Bond movie. Unfortunately, it is impossible to drive a car right by the Tiber river, like James Bond did, but you can always take a walk or ride a bike instead. The car crash and Bond’s aerial escape was filmed at Ponte Sisto bridge, located right between our campuses!
The Aston Martin DB10 and Jaguar C-X75 racing scene was set in front of the Vatican, in
via della Conciliazione. Personaly, it is one of my favorite places in Rome to enjoy the great beauty of Basilica di San Pietro.
Another mentioned location is the Museum of Roman Civilization, used in the film for a funeral scene.
• To Rome with Love
In the movie, Ellen Page’s scenes were filmed in our lovely Trastevere neighborhood, where JCU is located, and at the Baths of Caracalla.
Penelope Cruz’ character walked around the gorgeous Villa Borghese, an archaeological area of Villa di Quintili, and many other central areas of Rome, so if you want to organize a romantic evening, these spots are perfect for a date.
The scenes with Antonio Albanese and Alessandra Mastronardi were shot in Piazza Mattei with view of the Turtle Fountain, which you can reach in 10 minutes walk from theTiber campus. Other famous locations shown in the movie are Piazza Venezia, Via dei Fori Imperiali, the Colosseum, the Capitoline Hill, the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and Piazza Navona.
• Eat Pray Love
Julia Roberts’ apartment in Rome is located in via dei Portoghesi 8 .
After looking at her fictional holiday home, go to the restaurant where the main character enjoys authentic Italian food. The restaurant is Osteria dell’Antiquario located in Piazzetta di San Simeone.
You might want to repeat the exact scene from the movie, by ordering a huge plate of spaghetti, pizza, and a dessert. If you are not that hungry, go to Piazza Navona and try some new flavors of freshly made gelato, just like Julia Roberts’ character did.
She also has lunch with her attractive Italian teacher at Caffè della Pace in via della Pace near Piazza Navona.
You might also want to repeat- Julia’s journey by wandering around the Spanish Steps, Campo de’ fiori, Trastevere alleys, Villa Borghese, and via Condotti.
• The man from U.N.C.L.E.
Let’s start on the Spanish Steps. The Swedish actress Alicia Vikander looks like the new version of Audrey Hepburn in the classic film Roman Holiday. A classic Hollywood film famously filmed in Rome.
The next time we see all the main characters is when they are on the terrace of the Grand Plaza Hotel, having a lunch and enjoying the beautiful view. The place might be a little bit expensive, but “la dolce vita” right?
This shot was also filmed outside the Grand Plaza Hotel, in via del Corso.
