A Unique Study Abroad Experience: Becoming a JCU Gladiator

My experience with the JCU Athletics Department was in two parts, the first being training for the Maratona di Roma 2013 and second playing soccer for the university team. Working with the department was one of my favorite parts of studying abroad. It not only got me into the best shape of my life, but it was also a fun and rewarding experience. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly; they became some of my closest friends at John Cabot. Playing on the soccer team was a challenge for me, not having played before, but it was a great way to meet people and was a fun experience. I hope to continue the training I started at John Cabot, someday run another marathon, and keep in touch. I am extremely glad I got the opportunity to work with them.

Last semester, I studied at JCU and played on the JCU soccer team.  I absolutely loved my experience with the team!  By playing with the squad, I was able not only to work on my soccer skills but also to learn a lot about Italian soccer culture.  Playing on a team in Italy and playing against Italian teams made me feel more like I was actually living in Italy: like I was a resident rather than just an outsider.  I didn’t gain this kind of experience from a lot of other activities I participated in while I was in Italy, such as touring the Colosseum or even just going to classes.   Overall, the experience was incredibly enjoyable and valuable.  The only thing I would have changed is that I would have liked more time to practice!
