Liberal arts colleges across the United States have been facing a challenge in recent years, as they are criticized for failing to equip students with the business skills they need to thrive in the job market.
The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted Bentley University, one of JCU’s partner institutions located in Waltham, MA, for their efforts to combine “lifelong learning skills” and professional skills. President Gloria Cordes Larson noted that these two skill sets should not be pitted against one another in universities, and instead “a college degree should reflect both.”
Bentley, a university that combines business and liberal arts, has found that combining liberal arts and business instruction has been quite successful, resulting in high employment rates for its graduates.
John Cabot University similarly aims to equip its students with both practical professional skills and creative, analytical thinking skills that together will help them thrive in the workplace. JCU’s Career Services fair took place today in John Cabot’s Aula Magna, where representatives from multinational businesses, international organizations, and nonprofit institutions presented their organization to both study abroad and degree seeking JCU students, and following students were given a chance to network directly with the representatives of the organizations.
Regardless of major, our students must complete our general curriculum requirements that provide our students with a well-rounded education, and the availability of internships, work-study, and student assistantships allow our students to gain practical professional experience before graduating. In a country where unemployment is astronomical for young people, John Cabot University’s educational model that combines the liberal arts with the development of professional skills through hands-on internships and work experiences has allowed students to thrive professionally both in Italy and abroad.
