For two nights each semester, the JCU Drama Group performs a musical in the university’s Aula Magna Regina. Past productions include Grease, The Wiz, Chicago, Into the Woods, Avenue Q and Rent.

During the fall, the show is held during Thanksgiving week and closing night is hosted as a dinner theater. Guests arrive, are seated and enjoy their traditional Thanksgiving dinner while watching the show.

The Drama Group held auditions at the end of September and cast this semester’s show, a musical revue, featuring songs from Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Dreamgirls, Mamma Mia, Fame, American Idiot, Cinderella, Wicked, Rent and 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Rehearsals took place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for two hours in the Aula Magna. In the weeks leading up to the show these rehearsals were extended to four hours and weekend rehearsals were added around Guarini Campus.

The show has been a team effort from the beginning when a vote was taken by returning members to decide what show to perform. Several numbers have been directed and choreographed by students, and students have also handled the technical aspects such as the lighting and creation of programs. The Drama Group comprises both degree-seeking and study abroad students of all ages and six nationalities are represented in the cast and crew.

During the show Kelli Hudson, a study abroad student from Minnesota, will be accompanying the cast on the piano. The Drama Club also worked very closely with John Caudill, a degree-seeker from Kentucky, in rehearsal to learn the music. Both Hudson and Caudill spent a great deal of time learning the music and patiently accompanying the cast. Without both of their dedication and effort this production would not have been possible.

JCU staff member Juliana DiBona directed the musical revue, assisted by Stage Manager Kelly Simons and Choreographer Selina Strawley, both degree-seeking students from the United States. The group would also like to give a special thanks to Annamaria Borelli, Giovanni Salvati, Pilar Murguia, Gaby Ford, Eve Atkinson, and Savanna Murray for their time and assistance during the rehearsal process.

Tickets to the dinner theater may be purchased in the Student Service’s Office for €10 for members of the JCU community and €15 for external guests.  For more information, please contact [email protected]

Hope to see you there!
