Best Chance to Learn about Yourself

know-yourself

Some successful people I know have told me that you can earn a lot of money even if you did not attend college. This might be true, but earning money should not be our ultimate goal in life. Personally, my ultimate goal is to live a happy life, whatever that may mean for me. It may sound like a cliché, but that is really what I am looking for.

At some stage of our lives, we will need to start working to earn money, because of our basic physiological needs in order to survive: food, shelter, clothing, etc. Work can be fun and meaningful if you care about what you are doing and you enjoy doing it. A lot of people, like me, do not know exactly what they want to do in the future. It is not the darkest moment of our life: it is a starting point. When we are aware of our uncertainty about the future, it just means we are ready to go to the next step.

So what’s the next step? Take advantage of the freedom you have as a college student to do anything you want or can while you’re in university. JCU provides a bunch of opportunities for students to explore their possible areas of interest. There are numerous clubs you can join, different internship and student worker opportunities, and you get the chance to meet and interact with people with different backgrounds, personalities, and lifestyles.

This is the key: you just have to be willing to try new things and explore!

Closing with a recent example from my own life: before entering university, I always thought that I would be able to stay up late and still be energetic the next day. I assumed this because, honestly, I never really had to do it before university. One day recently, I stayed up most of the night doing a project and had to attend classes as well – I was awake from 4 a.m. in the morning till 6 a.m. the next day. Lesson learned: I am not a night person and I do not like black coffee.

You can learn more about yourself at any place and at any time. Just take it all, positive or negative, as a learning experience: sit back and enjoy the ride!
