International Affairs Professor Lars Rensmann: Basketball Diplomacy

It’s no secret that the United States and North Korea have a particularly tense relationship. An unexpected twist in this political rivalry occursed last month after Korea’s third nuclear weapon test, when former professional basketball player Dennis Rodman visited North Korea for a “basketball democracy” tour.  Although the presence of athletes in tense political situations is rare, it is not unprecedented.

On Friday, March 1, JCU Political Science and International Affairs Professor Lars Rensmann joined a live broadcast discussion on CBC’s Radio One morning show “The Current” to discuss NBA legend Dennis Rodman’s visit to North Korea.  The discussion focused on the significance of global cultural and political diplomacy and their impact of sports on global politics, with Professor Charles Armstrong. Professor Armstrong is The Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies in the Social Sciences in the Department of History, and the Director of the Center for Korean Research at Columbia University.

In addition to teaching Political Science and International Affairs at John Cabot University, Professor Rensmann is also a Permanent Fellow at the Moses Mendelssohn Center, University of Potsdam, and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences, Humboldt University Berlin. He has held teaching and research affiliations with several other universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Vienna and the University of Haifa. His work focuses on global political theory and global & European politics, and has appeared in many journals, including the European Journal of Political Theory, Politics, Religion & Ideology, Political Science, German Politics & Society, and Perspectives on Politics. Among other things, he is currently working on a new book, The Political Constitution of Humanity: Global Politics after Arendt and Adorno.
